Cabinet convenes regular meeting for May 2007 to deal with urgent issues
VNGOP – The Government's regular meeting for May 2007 was presided over on June 6 by PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and his deputies Nguyễn Sinh Hùng and Phạm Gia Khiêm. At the meeting, the PM emphasized major tasks to be fulfilled in June and the rest months of 2007 to reach a GDP growth rate of 8.5% throughout the year.

The Cabinet's agenda focused on solutions to settle down two urgent issues: minimizing traffic accidents and controlling bird flu.
Taking into account the Cabinet's recommendations, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng entrusted the Transport Minister to complete the draft decree with seven solution groups to maintain traffic order and safety and submit it to the Government.
To deal with the re-emergence of bird flu in 58 communes/wards of 31 districts in 15 provinces (Nghệ An, Quảng Ninh, Cần Thơ, Sơn La, Nam Định, Đồng Tháp, Hải Phòng, Bắc Giang, Ninh Bình, Bắc Ninh, Hà Nam, Vĩnh Phúc, Quảng Nam, Hưng Yên, and Thái Bình), the Government ordered these provinces' People's Committees to drastically take measures stamp out the epidemic in June 2007. PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng called for all ministries, sectors and local authorities to control bird flu and human avian influenza in line with his Document 645/TTg-NN.
Then the Cabinet discussed the Bill on State property management and use presented by Finance Minister Vũ Văn Ninh; the draft decree stipulating in details the implementation of some articles of the Law on HIV/AIDS Control and Prevention; and the draft decree on the retirement of civil servants. The agenda also covered the discussions of reports on socio-economic situation, domestic market, import and export in May and the first five months of 2007, on administrative reform and anticorruption in May 2007 submitted by the ministries of Planning and Investment, Trade, Internal Affairs and the Governmental Inspection.
Concluding the meeting, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng directed the ministries, sectors and local authorities to promote socio-economic development targets set in the early year, monitor economic ups and downs, timely discover and handle difficulties in business and production activities in order to obtain a growth rate of 9% in the last six months and 8.5% in 2007.
In the first five months of 2007, Vietnam continued to see a high economic growth with a GDP increase of 7.9%. Industrial production value rose up by 16.8% against the same period last year. Up to now, FDI into Vietnam reached US$ 4.3 billion (increasing by 64.2% compared to 2006), with 372 new projects of US$ 3.792 billion.
Export turnover was US$ 3.9 billion in May and US$ 18.12 billion in the first five months, increasing by 18.4% against 2006. Twenty exports obtained a high increase of turnover, especially crude oil, garments, footwear, marine products and coffee.
In May, Vietnam's import reached US$ 21.37 billion, going up by 26% compared to the same period in 2006, in which the import of machinery, equipment, spare parts was US$ 3.6 billion (increased by 45.1%); petrol and oil US$ 2.67 billion (11%); and iron and steel US$ 1.7 billion (64.7%).
Vietnam remained an attractive destination for foreign investors and tourists, especially from the Republic of Korea, the US, China, Japan, the UK, and Germany. About 1.8 million turns of tourist have arrived Vietnam since the beginning of the year, rising by 12.4% against 2006.
