Myanmar shares concern over China’s oil rig placement in VN’s waters

VGP – Myanmar’s Minister of Industry U. Maung Myint affirmed that his country called on relevant parties to abide by international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.

Mr. U. Maung Myint stressed the point while he was received by PM Nguyen Tan Dung in Ha Noi on Tuesday.

Since May 1st 2014, China brazenly moved its deep-water drilling rig escorted by over 80 armed and military vessels and many airplanes to the Vietnamese waters and installed the rig at the location which is 80 miles deep into the Vietnamese continental shelf and exclusive economic zone prescribed by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS).

China’s armed vessels escorting aggressively fired high-power water cannons at and intentionally rammed the Vietnamese public-service and civil ships, causing damage to many ships and injuring many people on board.

Viet Nam has exercised utmost restraint, showed every gesture of goodwill and exhausted all dialogue channels to communicate with the Chinese authorities of different levels for expressing protest and demanding China to immediately withdraw its drilling rig and armed and military vessels from the Vietnamese waters. Nevertheless, up to now, China has failed to respond to Viet Nam’s legitimate demand. On the contrary, China has been slandering and blaming Viet Nam while continuing to escalate its increasingly dangerous and serious acts of violation.

Regarding the bilateral ties between Viet Nam and Myanmar, PM Dung highlighted the positive development of bilateral cooperation in economics, trade and investment over the past time, suggesting that the two sides seek to further boost collaborations in 12 areas agreed upon by their high-ranking leaders, including seafood, oil and gas, telecommunication, aviation and energy.

The Myanmar Ministry of Industry and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade should discuss specific measures to facilitate Vietnamese businesses’ investment in Myanmar, including the early licensing of Vietnamese banks in the country, he said.

Congratulating Myanmar on its successful hosting of the 24th ASEAN Summit on May 10-11, PM Dung said he met with Myanmar President U Thein Sein on the sidelines of the event to seek ways to boost economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides agreed to coordinate with other ASEAN members in promoting solidarity within the bloc and building the ASEAN Community by 2015. They also raised a common voice in international and regional issues, including the ongoing tensions in the East Sea , he added./.
