Under Decision 445/QD-TTg dated on April 7, 2009 on orientations for the development of urban area system in Vietnam, Viet Tri was selected as the core city of the Northeastern region.
The city has a population of over 277,000, including 205,765 in urban areas. The urbanization rate stands at 74.14%.
Its economy expanded 13.14% between 2008 and 2011 and the proportion of labor in non-agriculture sectors is above 87.71%.
