Climate change adaptation projects ratified

VGP – The PM has approved the project portfolio to help Ninh Binh and Ha Tinh and Can Tho City to cope with climate change.

The projects worth € 52.35 million will be financed by French Development Agency (AFD).

The PM assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to send his official announcement to the AFD while the Ministry of Finance will be responsible for cooperating with relevant agencies to conduct negotiations on the credit agreements of the projects.

The relevant People’s Committees were asked to prepare corresponding capital from the local budget to ensure project implementation.

The fight against climate change is one of the strategic orientations of AFD’s action in Viet Nam. Between 2006 and 2014, agency allocated €471 million to Viet Nam via 16 Climate projects for both climate change mitigation (public transport, energy) and for adaptation to its consequences: water infrastructure against flooding, for irrigation and the promotion of conservation and mountain farming. 47% of AFD’s total commitments over this period were allocated to the climate.

In addition to these investment projects, since 2009, AFD has been co-financing the Support Program to Respond to Climate Change (SP-RCC). It is in the form of budget support to the Government, co-financed with the other development partners (JICA, World Bank). As much as €100 million have been allocated to it.
