VN, Laos complete landmark planting

VGP – PM Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao counterpart will attend the grand ceremony mark the completion of landmark planting between Viet Nam and Laos.

The event will be held at Thanh Thuy border gate in Nghe An province on July 9.

On the occasion, Viet Nam and Laos will also sign an agreement to handle free migration and uncertified marriages in the border areas between Viet Nam and Laos.

This agreement would contribute to the efficiency of the Agreement on Border Management Regulations between the two sides, according to Spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry.

The two countries share the borderline of over 2,000km, running across 10 provinces of Viet Nam and 10 provinces of Laos.

In 1977, both countries sides an agreement on border demarcation and ten years later, they basically fulfilled this work with 214 markers planted.

In January 2008, Governments of Viet Nam and Laos agreed to implement the joint project on upgrading and embellishing border markers.

The project started on September 5, 2008 with the building of marker 605 at the Lao Bao-Densavan border gate. Work was scheduled for completion in June 2013, by which point the total number of border markers between Viet Nam and Laos would be 835 in 793 positions, according to the Viet Nam News Agency./.
