Construction of third biggest hydro-electric plant starts

VGP – PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng on January 5 pressed a button to start the construction of Lai Châu hydro-electric plant, the third biggest of such kind in Viet Nam.

The 1,200 MW plant is of great socio-economic significance for not only the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu, but also the whole northwestern region.

With a total investment of VND 33,000 billion (US $660 million), the plant is designed to provide some 4.67 billion KWh to the national grid annually, and is expected to be completed by 2017.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stressed the government’s consistent policy to prioritize hydro-electric projects, particularly for multi-purpose ones that serving power generation, flood prevention, water supply, and local socio-economic development.

The Government leader hailed the local authorities and contractor for their good preparation for site clearance, residence resettlement, and investment.

PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng also asked the EVN to work with contractors, local authorities to back around 2,000 households to re-integrate into the new settlement areas.
