Gov’t gives top priorities to economic recovery

VGP – In the Government’s regular teleconference for June, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stressed the greater efforts to reverse economic recession and obtain a GDP growth rate of over 5% in 2009.

Economic recession stopped

During the two-day meeting which was concluded today, the Government members and leaders of 63 provincial-level governments agreed that, amid the global economic crisis, the efforts made by all sectors at all echelons, the business community and all walks of life have helped to keep the national economy from sinking in the recession and now start to rebound.

Over the past time, the Government has adopted many mechanisms and policies to enhance agro-industrial production; sharpen the country’s economic competitiveness; promote trade activities, export and market expansion; stimulate consumption and investment; and create favorable for enterprises and farmers through preferential credit policies.

The Government has also stepped up administrative reforms, anti-corruption, and poverty alleviation, supported laid-off laborers,poor people and disadvantaged students.

Some newly-arisen issues and public concern have been also fruitfully dealt with.

Positive indicators

Some challenges

- GDP growth rate in the first half: up 3.9% (3.0% in Q1 and 4.51% in Q2)

- Industrial output increases by 4.8%

- CPI rose up 2.68% in June compared with December 2008

- Total social investment capital : VND 322.6 trillion, up 18.1% against the same period last year

- New enterprises licensed: 37,000

 

- New FDI registered capital in the first six months lower than the same period

- Natural calamities and epidemics

- Shrinking production and soaring unemployment

- Low mobilization and disbursement of investment capital sources

- Food safety, overloaded healthcare services, smuggling, deforestation, foreign labor management, traffic accident and jams in big cities

Chairing the meeting, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng asserted that, to secure the GDP growth rate of 5% and higher this year, in the second half, all ministries, sectors and local authorities should continue to realize the effective solutions, focusing on promoting production, business and export.

"The Government, ministries, sectors and local authorities must continue creating favorable conditions for the development of industries, agriculture, services, and export, and attract more domestic and foreign invesment capital,” said the PM.

The Government chief also stressed the need of improving socio-economic analysis, statistics and predictions, so as to timely discover and cope with both domestic and international changes.

PM Dũng urged information agencies to further disseminate the State’s policies and the Government’s directions to foster the social consensus and determination, encouraging people to fulfill the set targets.

The Government also discussed revisions of some laws and the drafts of some decrees.
