Gov't leaders meet UN Under-Secretary General

VGP - PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and Deputy PM, FM Phạm Gia Khiêm today had separate meetings with UN Under-Secretary General Asha Rose Migiro in Hà Nội to discuss ways to strengthen ties between Việt Nam and the UN as well as other issues of common concern.

Under-Secretary General Asha Rose Migiro highly spoke of Việt Nam's significant socio-economic achievements.
She also praised the Government's solutions to rein in impacts of the global financial and economic crisis and its great efforts to design and implement a series of policies on social security and realizing the UN's Millennium Development Goals.
She lauded Việt Nam for its contributions to the UN reform toward the One UN Initiative, confirming that the UN will further assist Việt Nam to deal with challenges caused by the climate change and sea level rising.
Both the host leaders asserted that Việt Nam always places importance on consodidating ties with the UN.
They highlighted UN organizations' support and assistance to the country's socio-economic development, hoping that the UN will continue to expand cooperation with Việt Nam.

The One UN Initiative in Việt Nam is fruitfully implemented thanks to effective cooperation and coordination among all relevant parties, said PM Dũng, remarking that the model will help strengthen the UN performance.
Despite the global economic turmoil, the Vietnamese economy still grew 3.1% in the first quarter of 2009, the poverty rate continued to go down and people's living standard much improved, the PM revealed.
The Vietnamese leaders expected that the UN will continue to assist Việt Nam in coping with climate change and sea level rising.
They welcomed the UN’s upcoming conference gathering the world’s leaders in an effort to seek for practical ways to the issues.
Việt Nam commits to joining hands with the international community to cope with those threats, stressed the leaders, informing that, this month, the country will host ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in which participants will discuss climate change./.
