National Committee for climate change set up

VGP – PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng will head the 22-member National Committee for Climate Change, according to a decision signed recently by the PM.

Deputy PM Hoàng Trung Hải and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyễn Minh Quang are two Deputy Chairmen.

Other members include the Minister of Public Security, the Minister-Chairman of the Office of Government, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Science and Technology, and the Minister of Planning and Investment.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is the standing agency.

On the same day, PM Dũng also signed a decision on the working rules of the National Committee for Climate Change.

Climate change poses a real threat to Việt Nam as scientists estimated that about 40% of the Mekong Delta, which is the country’s biggest rice hub, would be inundated if sea level rises by one meter by the end of this century.

Some 20% of land area in Hồ Chí Minh City would be directly affected by sea level rise and the average temperature is projected to increase by 1.6 to 3.7 degrees.

The United Nations has listed Việt Nam as one of the five countries most vunerable to climate change.
