New national target program on rural clean water passed

VGP – The National Target Program on rural water supply and sanitation in the 2012-2015 period, approved recently by the PM, targets to deliver clean water to 85% of rural residents by 2015. 

Some 65% of the rural population are expected to have hygienic toilets, 45% of rural households to have hygienic breeding facilities, 100% of rural kindergartens, schools, medical stations to have hygienic latrines over the next three years.

To realize the above goals, the Government would allocate state budget that covers up to 90% of expenditure for building centralized water supply projects in disadvantageous, ethnic minority, mountainous, coastal and border areas.

The Government will provide 70% capital to small-scale water supply projects to serve poor households and 35% for “near poor” households.

Water supply projects of rural schools and medical stations will receive 90% of construction expenditure from the State budget.

The program has a total investment of around VND 27,600 billion, including VND 19,725 bollion for rural clean water and environmental hygiene projects; VND 5,961 for rural sanitation project; and VND 1,914 billion for enhancing communication, supervision and assessment capacity over the program./.
