The project consists of a US$2 billion handset plant and a factory worth US$1.2 billion for chip production.
Thai Nguyen is some 70 kilometers from the Vietnamese capital of Ha Noi and the construction of a set of highways linking Ha Noi to regional cities is expected to be completed around 2015.
In his remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony, PM Dung praised Samsung decision to choose Viet Nam as its major production base, which would help boost the strategic partnership between Viet Nam and the Republic of Korea (RoK).
The Government highly values Korean businesses’ contributions to socio-economic development in Viet Nam and pledges to create favorable conditions for them to pursue long-term investment in Viet Nam, PM Dung said.
He asked relevant ministries and leaders of Thai Nguyen to closely coordinate with Samsung to guarantee the schedule of the project.
Samsung has been operating a handset plant at the Yen Phong Industrial Zone in Bac Ninh. Since 2009, it has been leading Samsung’s overseas handset plants in terms of production, pumping out 150 million per year, which accounts for one-fourth of the company’s annual output./.
