3rd GMS Summit ratifies Vientiane Action Plan

VNGOP – The 3rd Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit was convened on March 31 in Vientiane, with the participation of the PMs of Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, China, and Việt Nam and the Asia Development Bank (ADB) President.

Under the theme “Enhancing Competitiveness through Greater Connectivity ”, the Summit thoroughly discussed six main topics: Enhancing transport connectivity; facilitating sub-region trade and transport; Public-private cooperation to boost investment and trade; human resource development; Sustainable management of natural resources; and the cooperation for GMS development.

The PMs of the GMS countries signed the joint summit declaration , re-confirming their vision and efforts to build up a sub-region of integration, harmony and prosperous development. They also assessed the implementation of GMS programs and projects and endorsed the Vientiane Plan of Action for GMS Development, stage 2008-2012.

Delivering his speech on GMS cooperation and solutions to boost the cooperation towards a greater Mekong sub-region of prosperity and sustainable development, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng emphasized the cooperation in protecting the environment while exploiting natural resources, including the water source of the River.

He stated that the GMS countries should closer work together to convert the existing transport corridors into economic routes, contributing to economic growth and poverty reduction in the sub-region.

On the occasion, PM Dũng witnessed the signing of many cooperation documents between the GMS countries, including Việt Nam’s MoU toward the Sustainable and Balanced Development of the Greater Mekong Sub-region North-South Economic Corridor and Enhanced Organizational Effectiveness for Developing Economic Corridor; MoU on the Road for Implementing the GMS Cross-border Power Trading; and the MoU for the Inclusion of the Nanning–Hà Nội Corridor and Youyiguan-Hữu Nghị Border Crossing Point with China.
