The Law on Vietnamese Citizenship (revised) states “The State shall provide conditions for those who have lost their Vietnamese citizenship to recover their Vietnamese citizenship, without harms to the country’s interests”. Vietnamese peoples residing abroad whose Vietnamese citizenship has not revoked or lost still have the Vietnamese citizenship.
Foreigners can hold both Vietnamese and foreign citizenship if:
* they have spouse, parent(s), or children holding Vietnamese citizenship;
* they are conferred with honorable medals and titles by the Democratic Republic of Việt Nam, the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Việt Nam, and the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam; or those with special contributions to Việt Nam;
* they can benefit Việt Nam’s socio-economic development, security, national defense by acquiring Vietnamese citizenship.
The Law also defines some cases in which foreigners, if permitted by the Vietnamese State President, hold both Vietnamese and foreign citizenship. And the applicants for the recovery of their Vietnamese citizenship, with just reasons and permitted by the State President, can continue their foreign citizenship.
In the revised Law, some requirements will be lifted for those who want to acquire or recover Vietnamese citizenship.
