ODA donors - VN’s companions on the road of socio-economic development

VGP – The 2008 meeting of the consulting group for Việt Nam (CG 2008) was inaugurated today in Hà Nội under the theme "Stabilizing the economy and maintaining its growth potential".

Giving the opening speech, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng took the occasion to thank ODA sponsors for their considerable assistance to Việt Nam over the past 15 years.

Many achievements gained by Việt Nam in socio-economic development, health, education, environment protection, rural development and poverty reduction can be attributed to the efforts made by international donors, said the PM.

The leader also showed his pleasure at the CG Meeting’s agenda which will focus on the macro-economy, Government’s policies, public administration, institutional reforms, climate change, ODA commitments and assistance from sponsors.

PM Dũng confirmed Việt Nam’s determination to realize its WTO commitments and other bilateral and multilateral ones.

He pledged that the Vietnamese Government will provide better information to people, enterprises and donors in order to raise mutual understanding and obtain a high consensus, so as to fulfill the set targets.

At the CG 2007, international donors pledged to give US $5.4 billion for Việt Nam’s poverty reduction and development program.

So far, Việt Nam has welcomed 51 donors, including 28 bilateral and 23 multilateral ones, with many regular ODA programs.

From 1993 to 2007, the total ODA commitment reached US $42,438 billion and US $19,865 billion were disbursed (61.86%). ODA capital is an important fund for development, accounting for 11% of the total investment from the whole society and 17% from the State budget.
