PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng: VN supported to become UN Security Council non-permanent member

VNGOP – PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and the Vietnamese delegation has just concluded their trip to New York to attend the 62nd UN General Assembly, opening a new prospect in the cooperation between Việt Nam and the UN and the international community. This helps to create good preconditions for Việt Nam to take part in global affairs. On the occasion, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng had an interview with Vietnamese correspondents on the tour's results.

Mentioning Việt Nam's attendance to the general debate of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly,PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stressed that, at the session, Việt Nam would be voted to the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term of 2008-2009. This is a chance for Việt Nam to collaborate with the UN Security Council in settling conflicts, ensuring countries' sovereignty and independence; boosting development programs and dealing with global social issues; establishing international political and economic relations of equality and mutual benefit for and among nations.
The general debate was also a good opportunity for Việt Nam to make use of UN members' supports to the country's national development as well as cement and deepen its cooperation with them in the time to come.
The Government chief revealed that the Vietnamese delegation conveyed to the international community a clear message “Việt Nam is an active, constructive, cooperative and responsible member of the international community”.
PM Dũng said that at the general debate on September 27, the Vietnamese delegate's head gave a speech assessing international situations, highlighting the UN's role, and mentioning countries' common aspiration for the priorities in the UN's performance. The speech also praised Việt Nam's efforts and contributions to the UN's affairs and confirmed that Việt Nam is competent to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
During their stay in New York, the PM and his deputy, Foreign Minister Phạm Gia Khiêm had many meetings with the UN General Secretary and leaders of some permanent and non-permanent UN Security Council members. In the meetings, many countries and international organizations affirmed their supports to Việt Nam's bid for the UN Security Council non-permanent member.
On the occasion, the PM had discussions with the US-ASEAN Business Council and the Việt Nam-US Senior Consulting Council on improving Việt Nam's competitiveness. At the working sessions, the American businesses expressed their aspiration to invest in important fields such as infrastructure, energy, manufacturing industry and service, transport, seaport, and aviation. American investors and enterprises showed their determination and confidence that the US will become the first investor in Việt Nam.
PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng was convinced that, with an open and constructive foreign policy as well as its active contributions to international peace and security and development cooperation, Việt Nam will enjoy full support from all member states for its candidature for a non-permanent seat in the Security Council for the 2008-2009 term. Việt Nam will do its utmost to fulfill this important mission, the PM concluded./.
