PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng highly spoke of the results obtained by the sector in 2007, especially in preventing epidemics and dealing with consequences of natural disasters.

The Government chief emphasized five main tasks which should be realized by the sector in 2008.

Firstly, the sector should focus on improving capacity and State management.

Secondly, it is necessary to review, complete and supplement the healthcare network at all levels as well as effectively use investment capitals.

Thirdly, all economic sectors should be encouraged to open high-quality clinics.

Fourthly, the Ministry of Health and local departments should boost the preventive health work.

Finally, the Ministry of Health should direct the programs to train qualified practitioners to meet people’s demand and increase professional ethics.

By late 2007, there are medical workers in 100% of communes/wards, doctors in nearly 70%, nurses or midwives in over 93%, and practitioners in more than 84% of hamlets. Medical treatment was provided to health insurance card holders in over 70% of communes. Local clinics put the National Health Programs into reality, increasing people’s accessibility to health services, especially amongst the poor, women and children.
