PM urges to speed up preparatory work for the capital’s 1000th anniversary

VNGOP – In the regular meeting on April 16 between the Government and senior leaders of Hà Nội, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng requested ministries and sectors to proactively collaborate with Hà Nội’s authority in curbing inflation, promoting export, controlling trade deficit and preparing the 1000th anniversary of Thăng Long–Hà Nội.

In the first quarter, Hà Nội obtained the ever biggest GDP growth rate in the past six years (10.7%). Its social investment reached VND 8,340 billion, including US $574 million of foreign investment, 2.6 times higher than the same period last year.

However, the city saw a sharp CPI increase (9.33%); unstable operation of its financial, monetary, stock and real estate markets; and an excess of import over export (2.56 times).

The PM stressed that, in order to fruitfully rein inflation, boost export and economic development, and ensure social security in 2008, Hà Nội should delay or suspend some unnecessary constructions and focus on essential ones. To narrow the trade gap, the best way is to promote the production of exports, PM Dũng asserted. He went on to urge banks in the capital to assist export enterprises by providing them loans. The Government chief also asked Hà Nội to continue cutting down 10% of its regular administrative expenses, enhancing thrift practice, tightening price control and anti-speculation.

Preparing the 1000 th anniversary of Thăng Long–Hà Nội is one of most important tasks for not only Hà Nội but also all ministries and sectors. PM Dũng was unpleased at the construction of many major projects in the capital. He once again emphasized that all ministries and sectors at the central level and Hà Nội’s authorities and agencies must proactively work closely together to fulfill these projects.

PM Dũng also urged competent bodies and the Việt Nam Fatherland Front to promptly submit the plan on expanding Hà Nội’s boundaries to the Government’s regular meeting in April 2008, before submitting to the NA for final decision.

According to Hà Nội’s Mayor Nguyễn Thế Thảo, since the beginning of the year, Hà Nội has reduced 10% of administrative expenses in all budget-using agencies; cut down VND 15 billion for purchasing public vehicles and VND 40 billion for repairing some office buildings. The municipal authority has decided to delay four projects worth of VND 1,300 billion and extend the schedule of seven ones invested with VND 430 billion. The city has ensured the supplies of essential goods; supported poor and sub-poor families; maintained bus ticket price, school and hospital fees.
